How To Sew a Catnip Mouse
How to prepare the mice before your event
At the Family Nature Summit, we first prepared the mice on a sewing machine.
- Cut strong fabric in a rain drop shape. We used upholstery remnants.
- Cut a tail about the length of the body. Use cord, not yarn. Handles from shopping bags are great.
- Fold the best side of the fabric in. With the tail tucked inside, sew from the tail until about 2/3 around with a sewing machine.
- Make sure you double sew over the tail.
- Cut a rectangle 1 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. Sew along two sides to make a pouch. Turn right side out. Fill with one teaspoon dried catnip. Sew shut. You don't need more than a teaspoon.
- Turn your mouse body right side out by pulling on the tail. This tests the tail.
Instructions for your participants
- Put a catnip pouch in a mouse body. Add stuffing around the pouch - it won't need much.
- Pin the mouse's head shut, tucking in raw edges of fabric.
- Sew it up with tight stitches - to withstand a cat's attack.
- Give to a cat!
