At the 2010 Green Lifestyles Evening, Summiteers were encouraged to share green gift ideas. Here were the ideas that we received:

Gift Ideas

I gave compactable recyclable fabric shopping bags that fold up and fit in your purse.

I donated books to people less fortunate.

I made homemade toys.

All gifts between my wife and I for the last 16 years have been non-store bought.

I gave fair trade shade grown coffee and stainless steel cups.

I made a song for someone.

I donated to a local raptor rescue program - some injured raptors are taken to schools for education and students love this!

I made a bag for carrying firewood for my dad by sewing together prune bags.

I made a hooked rug of an ocean scene from burlap and recycled wool for my mom.

I picked up an elderly homebound lady's dog and took her to the veterinarian.

I donated to Heifer International - a gift of a goat as a response for a favor.

I donated to a local Humane Society or dog rescue as a gift for someone who is compassionate, gracious and a good steward.

I mucked horse stalls for a friend.

I gave subscriptions to National Wildlife magazines.

I volunteered at a wildlife ranch.

I volunteered at an animal shelter where I pet the animals and played with them.

I donated scholarships for a children's camp in honor of six friends at Christmas.

In my neighborhood I take people to their doctor appointments.

I donated to "Save a Reef" through Nature Conservancy for a birthday gift.

I made a bean soup mix and put it in a jar with directions.

My state has many special fundraising license plates. I buy a different one each year. This year is our local animal shelter. Next year is our state's Audubon chapter. It has an avocet on it!

I plant a tree in a person's name.

I send someone on vacation.

I gave a friend a small live evergreen tree for Christmas.

My mother gives her granddaughters items from her home as wedding gifts or for special birthdays. Her married granddaughters have gotten silver services, antique china and crystal ware.

I took my mother-in-law for a hair cut at Vidal Sassoon Salon.

A kiss is still a kiss!

Where to Find Green Gifts

Garage sales

A Free Box - the town we are from, Telluride, Colorado, has a used good exchange program on a side street. It has several big cubbies where one can drop unwanted, usable goods and find great goods for yourself as well!

Gift Wrapping Ideas

Make homemade cards.

Make Christmas cards from old cards. Add ribbons and decorations.

Take sturdy gift boxes and gift wrap lids and bottoms separately. Then use them over and over for family members.

Wrap gifts in newspaper.

Buy gifts with less packaging.
