Green Lifestyles Evening Stations and Volunteer Roles
Station Topic Station Description Volunteer Description
Celebrations and Crafts Get tips on how to celebrate green birthdays, weddings and other holidays. Make a beeswax candle. Kids make caterpillars from plastic bottle tops drilled in the center and strung onto rrope. Summiteers learn how to set up a recycling station at their work or school for items that are not collected by their municipalities - and maybe even make money in the process! We need two volunteers at all times. We need volunteers who enjoy simple crafts.
Cleaning Help kids decorate wooden clothes pins with markers and stickers. Teach small groups how to play an easy game of "Piccobello" which involves rolling a dice and hanging up laundry. Share green cleaning recipes. We need two volunteers at all times. We need volunteers who like crafts and who can help people play a game.
Energy Saving Show some unusual energy-saving gadgets. Demonstrate how to make your fridge more energy efficient. Help children make playdough food. Help children take a quiz on "what uses energy?" Teach people how to improve their caulking technique for weatherization projects. Explain the basics of geothermal heating and cooling.

We need at least two volunteers at all times. We need volunteers who:

  • understand basic energy concepts, such as geothermal energy
  • like to sculpt with play dough
  • can teach best practices of caulking
  • Food: Local, Organic and Fair Trade At this station will be a small cardboard house in the middle, with yarn spreading across distances to represent how far food travels. Summiteers take laminated recipes to calculate how far that meal traveled - if they choose local versus non-local options. Summiteers can write down their favorite locally sourced food and recipes. Show examples of reusable lunch packaging. Summiteers taste test fair trade chocolate samples and vote to see which brand is the most popular.  We need two volunteers at all times. We need volunteers who love food! Volunteers will explain the concept of food distance game, collect back the recipe cards and clean them for the next user. We need volunteers to ensure the kids don't eat all the chocolate samples in one gulp - and that everyone puts in a vote. It would be great if the volunteers knew about the concepts of Fair Trade, but that info will be provided.
Freecycle Acquaint Summiteers with Freecycle. Summiteers can bring some children's books or toys to Freecycle with other children for the trip home!  We need volunteers who have freecycled before.
Garden for Wildlife Quiz Summiteers on invasive species. Help kids take a quiz where they match animals to their homes. Give out green gardening tips. Help children make pretend binoculars out of toilet paper tubes and search for pretend birds in nearby trees.  We need volunteers who enjoy gardening and helping young children.
Green Bags  Quiz Summiteers on plastic bag usage. Show samples of plastic bag alternatives. Show Summiteers how to crochet a bag out of plastic bags.   It would be great if the volunteers had crocheting experience, but it's an easy skill that you can learn at Summit.
Green Pets Help Summiteers sew a simple catnip-filled mouse from recycled fabric. Share green pet tips and green pet products. We need volunteers with basic sewing skills who are not allergic to catnip.
Green Toddler Play Area In this enclosed area in the middle of our stations, our smallest Summiteers play with toys made from recycled items while their parents and siblings participate. Parents can only use this area while perusing the green lifestyle stations, not to go dancing, as that is too far away. We need volunteers who like to play!
Relax and Renew Taking time to ensure you do not burn out from saving the earth is an important and difficult-to-learn skill! Summiteers can have a hand painted with henna in beautiful patterns, a body paint that stays on the skin for a few days. We need volunteers who like to paint, and might have experience painting people. If you like to doodle, painting with henna is like doodling!
Tell Your Story / Take a Pledge At this station, Summiteers will write on a card something green they currently do or want to do. The volunteer takes their photo holding up the card. Some photos could be included in the slideshow and / or on the Summit website. Summiteers fill out an evaluation of the green lifestyles evening and pledge to start something green. A few months after the Summit, they will be emailed to remind them of their pledge. If we can get door prizes donated, Summiteers win prizes for filling out the evaluation and pledge form. We need extra friendly volunteers who can  coax / charm Summiteers to write down a pledge and get their photo taken. You don't have to be a great photographer as the camera will be on a tripod.
Travel and Vacations Summiteers learn how to green their travel by what they pack, offsetting through carbon purchases, biking to work and learning about the Green Map movement. We need volunteers who are interested in greening their travel.
