Column 2 ("Difficulty"): "Easiest", "Easy", "Moderate", or “Strenuous”……A subjective rating of physical difficulty, based on distance, climb, grade, trail condition (each trail was fully scouted by Family Summit faculty, Nov. 2007.)

Column 3 ("Dist."): Round trip (total) mileage for the hike.

Column 4 ("Climb"): Total cumulative climb, in feet. Nearly the entire climb for each hike comes in one long stretch on each hike, with the exception of "The Combo" hike which has it split into two widely separated stretches.

Column 5 ("Steepness"): Grade, based on uphill climb vs. distance. 1= flattish; 2= some steeper grades; 3= significant steep grades dominate the hike experience; 4= #3, plus some extended particularly steep trail sections; 5= #3 & #4 plus some areas requiring hand-over-hand scrambling and/or involving dangerously exposed areas (none at this Summit.)

Column 6 ("Trail Width"): Trail width & use; W= wide, heavily used; N= narrower, more lightly used.

Column 7 ("High Point"): Highest elevation above sea level on the hike, in feet

Column 8 ("Type"): O= Out and back; L= Loop; ML= Mostly a loop; P= Point to point hike (finish different than start location.)

Column 9 ("Hood View"): Closest distance in miles to Mt. Hood's glaciers. (N= Hikes with no Mt. Hood views.) Mt. Hood is Oregon's highest point at 11,239 ft. above sea level, a volcano that last erupted about 200 years ago.

Column 10 ("Max Group Size"): Maximum number of Summit participants. No wiggle room on limit of 10 due to Wilderness regulations.

Column 11 ("Drive-Mi."): One-way drive from Summit site to trailhead in miles. A slash separates the outbound and return trips.

Column 12 ("Time"): Note that while every hike has been scouted in advance, and an attempt is made to start longer hikes earlier, they cannot be precisely timed for varied Summit paces. Thus, there may be late arrivals…..i.e., post-3:15 returns (when the 5 year-old plus youth program lets out) are possible even if the schedule says we’ll be back by then); arrange for child care just in case.
