Nature Vacations That Feel Like Family Reunions

Summit Gatherings Become Annual Highlight For Households Who Take Part Year After Year

August 29, 2010 | By STEVE GRANT, Special to the Hartford Courant

Adults hiking in Lake Tahoe at 2010 Family Nature Summit.Hartford - - You are excused if you haven't heard of Family Nature Summits. Your hiking boots cost more than this volunteer-run, nonprofit group's advertising budget.

Existing in the shadow of heavily promoted commercial vacation packages, Family Nature Summits quietly chugs along year after year. Its members, mostly families with children, gather each summer at some heaven-on-earth location in North America for a weeklong "summit" — best described as a vacation romp in the outdoors with amenities to match the scenery. Next year's summit is set for Aug. 1 through 7 in Missouri's Ozarks.

Summit-goers, many of whom learned about the organization by word of mouth, keep coming back for more.

Tahoe City Route Transformed into Kids’ Discovery Trail

Young adults building nature trail as Family Nature Summits community service project.Tahoe - - A new nature trail at Granlibakken, just outside of Sunnyside-Tahoe City, allows parents to introduce their children to nature in an entertaining and educational manner.

The half-mile “discovery trail” features a variety of stations designed to teach kids about the lifestyles and habitats of animals. Its format combines the fun and excitement of a playground with the educational possibilities of a museum. By combining active elements, where children crawl, jump and run, with opportunities to explore and observe interesting natural phenomena, it simultaneously caters to a child’s need for physical exertion and desire to learn about the natural world.

The trail was built by volunteers from around the country, who assemble every year at a different wilderness destination to learn about, enjoy, and give back to the environment.
